World We Imagine - Part #3
Her Collections
Social enterprise platform
Art needs to be discovered, and creativity needs to be spread. At Her Collections (HC), we want to help women in underrepresented communities who do not have access to adequate forms of technology by providing them the opportunity to sell their products online to a wider audience. We work to create a centralized hub for small businesses to display their work in an online marketplace while having stationed volunteers in all locations to help with business processes. We take pictures, aid in descriptions, and even do stories on the women and their crafts.
This work is important because it transcends just increasing the visibility of products; it also dives into aiding poverty alleviation through financial freedom (as women are still 26% below the employment rate of men), access to education, and technology proficiency. Women, in most developing countries, are the sole caregivers of their households; a cultural obligation for most. This being said, they are usually left with no education or confidence to be self-starters and are left as unpaid labor workers of their families. The IMF has reported that gender equality and economic development are positively correlated, and it is important for businesses and governments to start investing in initiatives that create these long-term solutions.
Our unique selling point is that, aside from just providing a centralized online platform, we work with communities and institutions to create volunteer opportunities alongside unique donation tunnels as funding - to assure that the original creator is always receiving an adequate amount of final profits. Our most prominent initiative is bringing women from Uganda who make jewelry out of recycled paper and having them teach fun classes at colleges for a small fee. As a social enterprise, our business model is one where all our funds undergo a circular flow; so that any gain is invested back into the business. We strive to create a community of creatives, but also people who are curious and want to create lasting change in the lives of others. We also realize that fast-fashion is outdated and people are more elastic when it comes to purchases with sustainable viability and a strong message; meaning they would be willing to spend more.
Anima Mundi Development is notorious for staying true to the image of being socially driven in their investments, and we at Her Collections strive to be the first to bring together women from all walks of life to grow, learn, and create together. Any sort of development cannot happen without the empowerment of women, and the sooner we realize this through actionable change, the sooner we will all reap the benefits - so why not be a first mover and set a precedent for others to follow in good fortune.
