Why Ancient Wisdom Matters in the Modern World (final thoughts)

Though I did not have the opportunity to finish this book, I was still encapsulated by the wisdom the author bestowed upon us through his adventures and findings and how everything is applicable to modern society but is usually overlooked. Firstly, the overall essence within the book is this idea that we as humans need to be one with nature and our surroundings. We need to shift our mindset from a consumerism one of need and selfishness to one that is community based. This is how all these indigenous societies have prospered throughout time and maintained their culture and history. It is interesting how the fundamentals of many of our global issues could potentially be solved through these ways of life as they promote harmony, unity, and equity. The only issue now is that with globalization and everything becoming a melting pot, it becomes harder to distinguish cultures, everything's mixes in together, and sooner or later cultural erosion takes place. 

Another interesting thing touched on is how in our modern world, there is this notion of compartmentalization; where we distinguish problems as varying entities rather than a sum of a greater whole. This is not how life, nature, or the world works and it is negatively affecting how we react to situations in our lives and we need to be more interconnected in our restorative approaches.

I particularly enjoyed when he talked about the knowledge of elders and how it acts in the preservation of wisdom. I think what we fail to understand and see, especially with the rise of technology, is how there is such a unique touch regarding the passing on of knowledge when it is done traditionally through elders. There is a level of humanity and humility that aids in decision making, assures that a proper and noble path moving forward is taken. I think we forget how important this level of oracle history is and its tremendous impacts. 

What stuck out to me was the message overall regarding how indigenous tribes are examples for how we should be rethinking how we interact and expand our horizons towards the world and challenge ourselves to think in new, inclusive and wholistic manners.
